Namphuong Van is a Senior Designer at Zipongo. She helps make sure our product looks good and stays up to date with current design trends. She’s also focused on spearheading a new style guide to create a common language and pattern library across all of our teams.
Namphuong sparked an interest in digital media art after taking a few courses in college. Since graduating from San Jose State University, she’s worked as an in-house designer for Curse and Adobe. She’s also freelanced for Dropbox and WeFunder. In her spare time, she enjoys anything DIY like arranging succulent gardens, making music on her midi keyboard and hand lettering.
1. Tell us why you joined Zipongo.
A few months before joining Zipongo, I experienced some health issues that made me more conscious about my eating habits. Coincidentally around the same time, my old colleagues reached out to me about an opportunity with Zipongo, a company that helps people eat healthy! Working here fuels my desire to contribute to an awesome product that helps people make healthier choices.
2. What are you most proud of, personal or career-wise?
One of my favorite achievements was having my photography featured on Unsplash. It has more than 120,000 downloads and counting! As for career-wise, I got tired of the corporate scene, so after mustering up some courage, I quit and moved to NYC for a year. I used that time to freelance, focus on myself and explore somewhere that wasn’t California. It was super scary at first, but I grew a huge deal by taking that leap.
3. What’s your favorite restaurant in San Francisco?
I love anything that comes in a food truck or from vendors at events. A few top places that get my mouth watering are Koja Kitchen and Frozen Kuhsterd. Another unique spot is Eatsa, a super cool futuristic place where you order your customized quinoa bowl from a screen and when it’s ready, the glass container opens up for you to take it.
4. Can you share something that ranks high on your bucket list?
Probably cliché, but I want to see as much of the world as I can. So far I only have Japan crossed off on my list. It’s so fascinating to see different cultures and breathless sceneries that I haven’t seen yet in person. Up next on my travel itinerary, in no particular order, are New Zealand, Ireland and Southeast Asia. Follow my adventures on Instagram @namphuong.
